Nearly 60 fourth and fifth-grade mathletes from across the district competed in the Dare County Schools 3rd Annual 24 Game Math Competition on Wednesday, March 26 at First Flight Elementary School.

The district-wide tournament brought together talented math students from DCS’s five elementary schools. Students began learning and playing the math card game 24 Game in their classrooms at the start of the school year to strengthen their computational fluency, number sense and critical thinking skills. During the competition, students were given 15 seconds to combine the four numbers on a game card to create 24 using the order of operations.

School representative teams were selected from overall classroom winners. After two rounds of play, the top 16 players advanced to the semifinals. The highest scorers then moved on to the final round.

This year’s four finalists were:

  • Vladimir Hardzei (5th grade, Kitty Hawk Elementary School)
  • Sylene Midgett (4th grade, Cape Hatteras Elementary School)
  • Hampton Tyson (4th grade, Kitty Hawk Elementary School)
  • Casper Voellmecke (5th grade, Kitty Hawk Elementary School)

After a competitive round, Sylene Midgett claimed the championship title, marking the third consecutive win for Cape Hatteras Elementary School under the guidance of coach and AIG facilitator Tami Harsh.

“This competition is always so intense and today was no different. I am always amazed at the speed with which the competitors mentally calculate their responses,” said Steve Basnight, Dare County Schools superintendent. “The students appear to remain so calm, but it keeps me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Congratulations to all the students and teams. I’m so proud of all of you!”

Dare County Schools expressed thanks to MTSS/math and science coordinator Dawn Tillett for organizing the event, as well as the dedicated elementary school coaches for their guidance and support:

“The district would also like to thank last year’s participants for returning to proctor this year’s tournament,” stated a DCS news release.
