A man of many companions may come to ruin, but true is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. – Proverbs 18:24

What would life be without friends? Friendship is one of life’s greatest blessings, a beautiful reflection of God’s love and care. I’ve heard it said that some friends come quickly and move on, some stay for a season, and others last a lifetime. The elders in my life often remind me, “If you have enough friends to count on one hand, then you are blessed.” How true that is! True friendship isn’t measured by the number of people we know, but by the depth of the bond that is shared.

We often gravitate toward those who think like us, act like us, and believe in the same things. That feels safe and comfortable. But then there are friends who are our opposites, and we tread gently in those relationships, careful not to “upset the apple cart.” These connections challenge us to grow and broaden our perspective. Regardless of the differences, one thing is certain: God allows people of all kinds to enter our lives for a purpose.

Some friends bring wisdom or a timely message, while others come into our lives for moments of joy, laughter and fun. Some friends offer and receive comfort in times of need. Friendship, when true and real, is a complex yet beautiful tapestry. It is a reflection of love, trust and vulnerability—a mirror of God’s desire for us to be in community.

What does the Bible say about friendship? The Bible holds rich wisdom about friendship, reminding us of its divine origin and value. God knows the importance of close, loyal friendships—those friends who walk beside us in all seasons of life. Such friends are more than just companions; they are God-given treasures who bring comfort, joy, and strength.

Jesus Himself demonstrated the ultimate example of friendship in John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Through His love, Jesus showed us that true friendship is about giving of ourselves selflessly and deeply.

Let us cherish these relationships, offering the love, grace and kindness that God extends to us. And may we always remember the greatest Friend we have in Jesus, whose love never fades and whose presence is eternal. The song “Jesus loves Me” is playing in my mind.
