Congratulations are in order for the top winners in The Coastland Times’s annual Mutt Madness Photo Contest, sponsored by Roanoke Island Animal Clinic. From a total of 84 entries, the four garnering the most votes were:
First place honors went to Benny, age 4, from Manteo. Benny’s contest entry stated: “Benny is 4. We got him from the Humane Society. My daughter says he’s a Dingo-German Shepard- Labwawa. He loves the water and fetching his ball.”
Second place went to Putter, age 16-plus, from Nags Head. Putter’s contest entry stated: “Putter is 16+ years old. She was adopted from the local SPCA as a puppy. She is a Jack Russell/Beagle. (Jack-a-Be) and lives in Nags Head on the golf course. (Hence her name.) Her favorite thing is to hang out on the deck, making sure passersby call out “Hi, Putter.” She loves car rides (as long as she gets the front passenger seat!) and walks at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. She lives for belly rubs and biscuits. Lots of biscuits!”
Third place was secured by Pokey, age 10 months, from Kill Devil Hills. Pokey’s contest entry stated: “Pokey was found in Manteo by Animal Control after they received an anonymous phone call. He was huddled underneath a trailer in a thunderstorm during Tropical Storm Debby. We met him at the SPCA and we fell in love with him. Needless to say he is now our Pokey little puppy.”
Lars, age 3, from Harbinger, rounded out the group in fourth place. Lars’s contest entry stated: “Cutest little Chiweenie who loves to play with his chew toys.”
Prizes for the winners were provided by Roanoke Island Animal Clinic, Food Lion 2154 Nags Head, Hatteras Island Pet Resort, Ocean Sands K9 Resort and Poodles & Bob.
