The Dare Soil and Water Conservation District presented the prestigious Salt Marsh Award to Thomas A. Hill in Raleigh on Monday, March 31, 2025 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to conservation efforts throughout Dare County. The Salt Marsh Award was founded in 2024 to recognize individuals that make outstanding contributions to the conservation of natural resources in Dare County, with a particular focus on combating erosion, runoff and other water quality issues.

Hill has served as coordinator of the North Carolina Division of Soil and Water Community Conservation Assistance Program (CCAP) since its inception in 2012, and he has also been instrumental in bringing more than $400,000 in conservation assistance to Dare County since 2012. Additionally, Hill has provided valuable instruction, mentoring, technical assistance and expertise to these projects and many others.

On March 31, Hill retired from a 46-year career in soil and water conservation that began in 1979 and spanned the entire state of North Carolina. Although he was not a Dare County resident, Hill contributed greatly to the conservation of the barrier islands, marshes and swamps we call home, and his efforts are greatly appreciated, noted the Dare County announcement of his award.
