Rex Dea Etheridge, a historical interpreter at Island Farm, demonstrates 19th-century laundry techniques to students from Jarvisburg Elementary School, using traditional tools like lye-and-lard soap, wash basins filled with clean and soapy water, and heavy hand irons — all essential for this labor-intensive task.
Island Farm, a living history farm, is located on Roanoke Island two miles north of Manteo and welcomes school groups in the spring and fall.
