Camps for the kids, shows for adults come to Kitty Hawk starting in June

Theatre of Dare will be filling the Outer Banks summer with quality entertainment for both kids and adults, as the local community theater brings both camps and performances into its Kitty Hawk home.

“We’re thrilled to bring another summer of fun to Outer Banks theatergoers,” said Theatre of Dare business manager Kelsey Thompson. “It’s great lineup of drama, comedy, and of course, fun and educational theater camps.”

It all kicks off the evening of June 14 with a single staged reading of The Laramie Project, a play about the brutal beating and murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard and the impact it had on the small close-knit town of Laramie, Wyoming. The performance is a combined effort between Theatre of Dare and the Dare Arts Pride Project. Auditions for the performance will be held at the theater May 13, and since it is a staged reading, those cast in the play won’t be required to memorize lines. Information on the auditions and the performance can be found at theatreofdareobx.com/the-laramie-project.

After that, the kids will take over the theater for the first of six theater camp sessions beginning June 16. The camps will once again be led by Lost Colony alumnus Stacey Maxwell, and will feature sessions for kids ages 6-10 in the mornings and ages 11-17 in the afternoons. This year’s offerings include old favorites like musical theater and stage makeup, as well as new offerings such as camps focused on fictional wizards, superheroes and voice acting. Space is limited and registration is now open at theatreofdareobx.com/summer-camps-2025.

Finally, Theatre of Dare will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of the classic 1975 movie Jaws with seven performances of The Shark is Broken, a comic play based on the true story of three egotistical actors (Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss) as they bond, argue, drink and gamble while stuck on a boat waiting to film what would become the world’s first summer blockbuster. Performances will be held Wednesday evenings between June 25 and August 6. For more information, go to theatreofdareobx.com/the-shark-is-broken.

Tickets for both shows and registration for camps are all available at theatreofdareobx.com. For kids and adults looking to get out of the heat and humidity this summer, Theatre of Dare is hoping to provide a steady supply of air-conditioned entertainment all season long, noted the announcement of upcoming offerings.
