Beaufort County Community College (Beaufort CCC) recognized its top-performing students on April 14 for their leadership and achievement. Among the honors were nominations for the prestigious Dallas Herring Achievement Award and the Governor Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award. Students nominated for these awards are eligible for statewide recognition through the North Carolina Community College System.
Ashley Lowe is this year’s Dallas Herring Achievement Award nominee. A human services student and mother, she earned her GED through Beaufort CCC in just five months, driven by a desire to create a better future for her children.
“With the support of her instructors, Lowe overcame tremendous personal adversity, including surviving human trafficking,” noted a BCCC news release. “Today, she is an advocate for fellow survivors and a passionate supporter of educational access. She is committed to helping children who have experienced trauma, embodying the resilience and service championed by Dr. Dallas Herring.”
The Dallas Herring Achievement Award was established by the North Carolina Community College System in 2010 to honor Dr. Dallas Herring, one of the state’s foremost advocates for community colleges. The award is presented annually to a current or former student who best embodies Herring’s philosophy of “taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go.”
Trevon Barrett-Little is the college’s nominee for the Governor Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award. As president of the Men of Success minority male mentoring program and a student ambassador, Barrett-Little leads with empathy, vision and a passion for inclusivity.
“He returned to Beaufort CCC to pursue a career change in criminal justice and law. On campus, he champions mental health awareness, works closely with college leadership, and empowers his peers through advocacy and collaboration. He is a member of the Gamma Beta Phi National Honor Society and a TRIO/Student Support Services scholar, and he is driven by purpose and a commitment to creating positive change,” stated the release.
The Governor Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award was established in 2004 by the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents to recognize outstanding student leadership. The award also honors former Governor Bob Scott, who served as North Carolina’s governor from 1968-1972 and later as president of the North Carolina Community College System from 1983-1995. Scott died in January 2009 and was honored that the system named a student leadership award after him. The award highlights curriculum students who have demonstrated exemplary leadership and service.
