First Flight girls take top spot at NCC track and field championship

One-two finishes in three different running events by Morgan Miller and Kayla Folkes help push the First Flight girls to a Northeastern Coastal Conference track and field championship at Northeastern High School Track Wednesday.

In addition to Miller’s first place finishes in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs, teammates Leilany Hernandez and Catalina Lokie also earned respective conference titles in the discus and shot put finals.

The Nighthawks girls team finished the day with 110.5 points to second place Northeastern’s 104. Pasquotank County took third with 82 and Currituck County was fourth with 61, followed by Manteo in fifth with 54.5. Rounding out the team scoring, Camden County was in sixth place with 46, Edenton’s John A. Holmes seventh with 43 and Hertford County was eighth with 42 points.

Currituck County conference champions included Amani Dawson in the 100 meters and a 4 x 800m relay team while pole vault champion Caroline Gay was the only first place finisher for Manteo.

Hertford County and Currituck County boys dominated their team championship meet with Hertford County’s 107 finish just two points ahead of the Currituck Knights at 105. Tied for third, First Flight and Manteo scored 71 points each with Pasquotank County in fifth with 67, Northeastern sixth with 58, Camden County seventh with 44 and John A. Holmes in eighth place with 27 points.

Luke Haber was a double winner for Currituck County, winning the 200 meter and high jump events while Keanu Mcleod won the shot put and Demarcus Henderson finished first in the 110 high hurdles. Currituck runners also took first in the 4 x 400m and 387.75 meter relays.

Conference champions for First Flight included Liam Minnich in the 1600, Adlai Berryman in the 3200 and the 4 x 800m relay team. Manteo had two conference champions with Ezekiel Leary in the 800 and Luke Stevens in the pole vault.

Top finishers will advance to the NCHSAA 3A East Regional meet May 10 at James B. Hunt Jr. HS Track in Wilson.
