The Don and Catharine Bryan Cultural Series will present a live performance by Saakumu Dance Troupe, one of Ghana’s premier cultural performing groups, at the Duck Amphitheater at Duck Town Hall. This special event will take place on Wednesday, May 8, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Through the public’s support, the Bryan Cultural Series is also bringing Saakumu to Dare County Schools throughout the week for assemblies, expanding access to the arts and cultural education for local students.
“Renowned for its vibrant drumming, dance, and storytelling, Saakumu is recognized as one of the leading cultural troupes in Ghana,” stated a Bryan Cultural Series event announcement. “The ensemble has performed at weddings, funerals, and corporate events across the country and has entertained numerous dignitaries, including the former President of Ghana, H.E. John Mahama.”
The troupe has garnered accolades in both regional and national cultural competitions. In addition to their performances, Saakumu members are dedicated educators, sharing the traditions of Ghanaian music and dance with local children and international students alike, noted the announcement.
“This performance at the Duck Amphitheater offers an exciting opportunity for Outer Banks residents and visitors to experience the energy and artistry of West African performance. Set in the welcoming outdoor space of Duck Town Hall, the evening promises a celebration of rhythm, movement, and cultural connection,” the announcement continued.
This event is presented in partnership with Dare Arts, the Children & Youth Partnership for Dare County, and the Town of Duck, and supported by a grant from the Outer Banks Community Foundation.
