Pocahontas G. Ivey, 94 of Powells Point, NC was peacefully called to glory on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 in Moyock, NC. Pocahontas was born May 26, 1930, to the late Alfred Herman Gallop and Gertrude Gallop. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Ivey; and brothers Alfred Gallop, Johnnie Gallop, Claude Gallop, Wilbert Gallop, Clesten, and sisters Sadie Ferebee and Pauline Jones.
Pocahontas was survived by her daughters Gertrude Vango (Ray) of Fayetteville, NC, Cheryl Mitchell (Reginold) of Washington, DC, Luke Gallop (Deborah) of Moyock, NC, Darlene Lewis (Thurman) of Myrtle Beach, SC and Matilda Ivey of Brooklyn, NY. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, dear friends, and special daughter Jesse May Spence.
She was a longtime and faithful member of Pleasant Branch Baptist Church. Pocahontas was a caring, dedicated servant of her community and never met a stranger. Her loving wit and humor set her apart and she always welcomed everyone to her home and table. She thoroughly enjoyed engaging with people and programming at the Powells Point Senior Center where she was affectionately known as the “Domino Queen.”
Pocahontas was the first African American to integrate the food services industry in the Outer Banks. She was the rock and matriarch of her immediate family assisting in raising her granddaughter, Jacole, and supporting all her grandchildren, hosting Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts where she cooked entire meal spreads. Pocahontas was an enthusiastic, avid reader who graduated from the Jarvisburg Colored School as an honor student.
The funeral service will be held at Pleasant Branch Baptist Church in Powells Point, NC Friday, May 16, 2025 at noon. Friends and family may view one hour prior to the funeral. The committal rite will take place in the Pleasant Branch church cemetery immediately after the funeral services.
