Single lane closures to remain in effect during bridge preservation project

The William B. Umstead Bridge, frequently referred to as the Old Manns Harbor Bridge, will reopen to traffic before the end of the day Friday, May 16, stated a news release from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The bridge connects the northern end of Roanoke Island with mainland Dare County.

“Single lane closures will be in place 24 hours a day while work continues on a $33 million preservation project for the 70-year-old bridge,” the release continued. “Motorists should expect some brief delays on the bridge during the lane closures, which will be continuously controlled by portable traffic signals.”

Drivers traveling between Manns Harbor and Roanoke Island can use the Virginia Dare Bridge as an alternate route.

The bridge preservation project is expected to be complete at the end of 2026.
