The body of a Kill Devil Hills man has been recovered in the Atlantic Ocean.
Between 10 and 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Carlson “B.J.” Johnson III, 49, left Oregon Inlet with his dog in an 18-foot gray Maycraft for some recreational fishing.
At 9:54 p.m., he was reported overdue to the U.S. Coast Guard.
His body was located the next day about two miles north of Oregon Inlet and two-and-half miles offshore by a local fisherman. North Carolina Marine Patrol recovered the body, which is now with the state’s Medical Examiner.
As of mid-day Friday, Johnson’s dog has not been seen.
Sgt. Anna E. Barbosa with North Carolina Wildlife Commission stated the agency is still searching for the vessel. She received a report of a found vessel but it did not match the description. Those who spot a gray 18-foot Maycraft should call her at 252-947-1510.
Johnson was a local health care provider with Outer Banks Health, which issued the following statement Friday afternoon:
“Outer Banks Health is deeply saddened to learn of Carlson ‘BJ’ Johnson’s passing. BJ has been a nurse practitioner with Outer Banks Health for more than 10 years and his unwavering commitment to serving the patients he loved made a profound difference in the lives of many. Outer Banks Health extends its deepest sympathies to all who knew BJ, including his family, friends, colleagues and patients.”
