Area athletes set new personal best marks

About a half dozen area athletes set new personal best marks this past weekend at 2A and 3A state meet competitions in Greensboro.
Running in Friday’s 3A meet at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Truist Stadium, Currituck’s Demarcus Henderson picked up four points for fifth place finish in the boys 110 high hurdles with a new best time of :14.61. His points put the Currituck Knights in 46th place in a field of 60 teams.
First Flight boys tied with Triton for 59th place in the team standings after earning one point for an eighth place finish in the 4×800 meter relay.
Together Kayla Folkes and Morgan Miller earned 10 and 8 points respectively for the First Flight girls team to finish the day tied with Piedmont for 14th place among the 54 teams represented.
Saturday’s 2A Division competition with athletes from 56 teams saw Manteo girls tied with Jordan-Matthews and Patton for 26th place with 9 points. Manteo Boys scored one point to finish in an eight-way tie with Anson, Bandys, Forest Hills, Morehead, Southwest Onslow, Spring Creek, and West Wilkes at 46th place. Seaforth High School defeated 52 other teams to claim the 2A boys team title with 68 points.
Top Manteo performances included Caroline Gay clearing 9-6 in the girls pole vault with a new personal best height for second place. Teammate Paige Reibel also had a new best ever height of 7-6 for 12th place.
Setting new personal best marks in two events, Meredith Gaskill finished ninth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:36.05 and came back with a 12:33.64 in the 3200 for eighth place. The first eight in each event score team points.
For Manteo boys, Noah Bell and Ashton Tinsley also set new personal best pole vault marks. Both cleared 9-0 but failed to score points.
