Southern Shores, NC – It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Donald Bruce Barker (“Don”), who left us peacefully on May 15, 2025. Don was born with a spirit of service and a commitment to excellence that defined his life. He served honorably in the United States Army from 1969 to 1972, proudly representing the 4th Infantry Division in Pleiku, Vietnam. His bravery and dedication earned him numerous accolades, including the Infantry Crossed Rifles, three Bronze Stars with Valor, two Purple Hearts, the Combat Infantry Badge, and Air Medal Commendation. He rose to the rank of Captain after years of exemplary service as 1st Lieutenant.
After his military service, Don continued to serve his community through the Maryland National Guard. He later became a certified MODAPTS instructor, sharing his expertise in work measurement and time systems, and inspiring many with his knowledge and dedication to education.
Donald was a proud alumnus of North Carolina State College of Textiles, where he laid the foundation for a successful career and was also a member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. He later earned his Master’s degree from the University of Georgia. His passion for learning and teaching was evident in all aspects of his life.
Beyond his professional achievements, Don dedicated his time to delivering Meals on Wheels, found joy in practicing Tai Chi, and enjoyed the time he was able to spend with his family.
Don is survived by his loving spouse, Linda Long-Barker, his stepchildren, Denise Long, Debbie Long and her spouse Paula Grim; three grandchildren, Jordan Nessel, her spouse Andew, Kyle Best and Tyler Long; and his great grandchild, Callen Nessel. Cousins Gayle Winston, Dan Barker and his wife Carol.
A private memorial service will be held to celebrate Donald’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to North Carolina State University’s Textile School. It was Don’s goal and mission to help new students afford the education that contributed so much to his life’s success and meaning (https://giving.ncsu.edu/how-to-give).
