Edward Neal Kashuba of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, passed away on May 16, 2025. He was known as “Neal” to those who knew him as a child, “Ed” to those who knew him as an adult, “Big Ed” to his family, and “Baba” or “Grandpa” to his grandchildren.

Ed was born January 3, 1945 in Raleigh, North Carolina to Edward Peter and Margaret Leah Medlin Kashuba. He grew up as part of an extended Polish Catholic family in Chicago, Illinois before pursuing higher education at University of Notre Dame and Georgia Institute of Technology.

He married Jane Elizabeth Fredericks on July 25, 1970 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They had their first child, Edward Vaughn, 3 years later to the day. Joel James completed the foursome when he arrived on March 31, 1976. Ed was immensely proud of his boys, both personally and professionally.

Talk about tough nuts to crack! Ed was notorious for being one of the toughest. Those who succeeded were rewarded with unmatched wit and love mixed with a little (mostly) good-natured obstinance.

Thirty years working as a Civil Engineer for the United States Federal Highways Administration were impressive and impactful, but paled in comparison to the fifty-one years Ed served as a dad and the last twenty years of that he served as a grandpa.

Ed’s favorite spots were anywhere with Jane, working on his model trains, or rocking on the back porch of his OBX home with close friends or family.

Remaining to share Ed’s memory are wife, Jane; children, Edward Vaughn Kashuba (Leigh) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Joel James Kashuba (Leah) of Cincinnati, Ohio. There are also “the babies” Lillian Elizabeth (19) and Edward Carter (17) Kashuba of Raleigh, North Carolina; Loch Oskar (9), Lujah John (9), and Levh Atlas (8) Kashuba of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Flowers are welcome, but Ed requested donations in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (https://www.stjude.org). The family also welcomes donations to Mepkin Abbey (https://mepkinabbey.org) where Ed’s remains will be interred.

Words are not enough to express thanks to Wendy McQueen and Gregory Nunn for caring for Ed during his last year. There is no greater gift than gifted caregivers.

Service to be held Saturday, May 31 at 4 o’clock in the afternoon at Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.
