Columbia Early College High School announces graduation speaker Nelson Smith

Columbia Early College High School has announced that Nelson Smith, longtime educator and retired Superintendent of Tyrrell County Schools, will serve as the keynote speaker at the Class of 2025 graduation ceremony. The event will be held on Friday, May 30 at 7 p.m. in the Columbia High School gymnasium.

Smith began his career in Tyrrell County Schools in 1974 as a guidance counselor at the high school and quickly moved into the role of principal the following year. His 35-year tenure in the district included 14 years as principal, nine years as assistant superintendent, and his final 11 years as superintendent, retiring in 2009. In addition to his contributions to education, Smith is a veteran of the United States Air Force.

A graduate of East Carolina University, Smith holds a bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees, and an education specialist (Ed.S.) degree. He has lived in Tyrrell County since 1974 with his wife Joanne. Together they have a blended family of five children – each a graduate of Tyrrell County Schools – eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way.

“We are honored to welcome Mr. Smith back to Columbia Early College High School to share words of wisdom and encouragement with our graduating class,” said school leaders. “His lifelong dedication to our schools and students continues to inspire.” 

The ceremony is open to the public, and all members of the community are invited to join in celebrating the achievements of the Class of 2025.
