McCoy James will play baseball at Robeson Community College in Lumberton.
During his Cape Hatteras Secondary School career, James played in 49 games and produced a .490 batting average and .860 slugging percentage, batted 19 doubles, three triples, four homeruns, stole 55 bases, walked 49 times and struck out 22 times
James played several different roles for Cape Hatteras Secondary from pitching to designated hitter and even a little bit of outfield and first base. Most of his pitching during his senior year was limited to being a closer.
By far his biggest contributions on the field were his offensive production, and his play at shortstop, wrote Cape Hatteras baseball coach Keith Durham. He had a breakout sophomore year both offensively and defensively. During his sophomore campaign, he hit .562 and committed no errors in 70 chances playing shortstop and pitching.
James played a big role in the team’s historic run to the second round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state playoffs this year, commented Durham.
“We wish him the best of luck and look forward to following him as he moves to the next level to play for Robeson Community College,” said Durham.
This is Durham’s first signing in his 10 years of coaching baseball at Cape Hatteras. He is retiring from baseball coaching this year.
