Pedestrian dies after being struck by USPS-owned vehicle in Kill Devil Hills, driver charged

A Colington woman is facing a charge of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle as the result of a May incident in Kill Devil Hills that turned fatal.

According to a Kill Devil Hills Police Department news release issued the morning of June 4, 2025, on Monday, May 19, 2025 at around 2 p.m., KDHPD responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the 2000 block of Portsmouth Street.

“The investigation determined that 53-year-old Amy Hudler of Colington was operating a 2021 Mercedes-Benz mail carrier vehicle owned by the United States Postal Service,” stated the release. “While backing northbound on Portsmouth Street, Hudler struck 84-year-old James Hofler of Kill Devil Hills as he was crossing the roadway from east to west to check his mailbox.

“Hudler immediately contacted emergency services and remained on scene, fully cooperating with law enforcement,” the release continued.

Dare County EMS and the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department also responded.

Hofler sustained serious injuries and was transported by EMS to the Outer Banks Health Hospital in Nags Head to receive emergency care, noted KDHPD. He was later transferred to a higher-level medical facility, where he succumbed to his injuries on May 22, 2025.

As a result of the investigation, Hudler has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

“The Kill Devil Hills Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the Hofler family during this difficult time. We remind all motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant and exercise due caution on our roadways to help prevent future tragedies,” stated the release.
