October 31, 1938 – June 9, 2025

A dedicated homemaker throughout her life, Shirley was known for her warmth and kindness. She was a devoted member of Mt. Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carlton Aldridge “Jackie” Shannon Sr.; her parents; her sister, Geneva M. Midgett; and brother, Feldon Midgett.

Her memory will be cherished by her surviving family: two sons, Carlton A. “Jackie” Shannon Jr. and his wife Karen of Charlotte, NC, and John Shannon of Manteo, NC; three granddaughters, Kathleen Shannon of Celebration, FL, Emily Shannon of Orlando, FL, and Mary Shannon of Durham, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Shirley loved all kinds of crafts, including knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, and quilting.  Many of her creations have become family heirlooms.  She was a collector as her cabinets full of beanie babies and dolls will attest.  She also loved taking and being in pictures of just about everything, especially family and family occasions.  She and Jackie loved to travel, especially to places like Branson, Missouri to see the country music shows, to Tangier Island and to the Amish country.  But the true love of her life was her family.  She and Jackie were a devoted couple, rarely seen apart following his retirement and up until his death.  She was a proud mother to their two sons and a loving grandmother to their three granddaughters.  She will be sorely missed.

A funeral service to honor Shirley’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at Twiford Outer Banks Chapel with Pastor Marc O’Neal officiating. Burial will take place at Manteo Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation one hour prior to the service to celebrate her life and remember the joy she brought to those around her.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, PO Box 787, Manteo, NC 27954, to continue Shirley’s legacy of faith and community service.

Shirley will be deeply missed by all who knew her, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion that will be remembered for generations to come.
