Southern Shores residents are enjoying the newly completed Trinitie/Juniper Trail bridge. The bridge opened before Memorial Day, just ahead of schedule and just under budget.

“I still brake when I go over the bridge,” said council member Mark Batenic at the June 3 council meeting, referring to the old bridge with its steep angles. “It’ll be a habit that’s hard to break.”

Mayor Elizabeth Morey called the bridge a really great success, and said she’s received positive feedback from both people driving over it and boaters that now have a comfortable clearance to travel under it.

In other arenas, Southern Shores is making strides to add ease and enhance beauty. About 30 citizens showed up to an open house of the entry corridor committee, providing input on potential structural and landscape design ideas to revitalize the Hwy 158 entry corridor. In the informal meeting, residents shared their preferences about different commercial building styles, parks and walkways.

The Entry Corridor Plan aims to provide a welcoming identity for the town, support local business development, enhance green spaces and landscaping, improve accessibility and safety, and establish cohesive architectural standards.

“I think we got some good direction and some really good enthusiasm … We appreciated everybody who made the effort to come to [the open house],” said Mayor Pro Tem Matt Neal.

The town is hoping for a similarly good turnout at Coffee with a Cop, a community event designed to forge positive relations with local law enforcement. To enjoy a good cup of coffee and conversation, all residents are invited to Shore Roasters Coffee, located at 1 Ocean Blvd, on Friday, June 27 from 9 to 11 a.m.
