Passenger in Hatteras Island crash succumbs to injuries

A passenger involved in a Hatteras Island crash that occurred Tuesday afternoon has died, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
A news release from NCSHP issued Thursday afternoon reported that on June 24, 2025 at around 2:43 p.m., NCSHP responded to a fatal collision on NC 12 near Lela Court in Waves.
Joan Casey, 84, of Newport News, Va., was traveling south on NC 12 when she crossed the centerline and collided head on with a north bound vehicle. She was transported to the Outer Banks Hospital with non-life threating injuries, stated the release.
Joan’s husband John Casey, 90, was a passenger in the vehicle and wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, according to NCSHP. He sustained life threating injuries. He was transported to Norfolk General, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver and occupants of the vehicle Joan Casey struck weren’t injured.
“After consulting with the District Attorney’s Office Joan Casey was charged with Left of Center,” stated the release.
