A skimboarder has been hospitalized following injuries sustained Tuesday evening in Kill Devil Hills.
According to information issued by the Town of Kill Devil Hills, on June 24, 2025 at around 5:54 p.m., the Kill Devil Hills Police Department (KDHPD), Fire Department, Ocean Rescue and Dare County EMS responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a 19-year-old male found floating face down in the ocean near the Avalon Fishing Pier.
“A bystander was able to pull the victim from the water. Shortly after, a KDH police officer arrived and immediately began first aid until additional emergency personnel arrived to continue medical care,” stated the KDH news release. “Following immediate life-saving measures, the victim was transported off the beach and taken by Dare County EMS to the Outer Banks Hospital. He was then airlifted by Dare MedFlight to another hospital for further treatment.”
According to witnesses, the individual had been skimboarding near the pier when he fell and appeared to strike one of the pier’s pilings.
“The Town of Kill Devil Hills extends sincere thanks to the fast action and attention from the bystanders, as well as all responding emergency personnel and medical teams, for their coordinated efforts during this incident,” stated the release.
“The Town would also like to remind beachgoers that KDH Ocean Rescue lifeguards are on duty daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day. A list of KDH beach access locations with fixed guard stands is available on the Town’s website. If no lifeguard is present and you experience an emergency, dial 911 immediately,” the release continued.
