Man visiting Outer Banks area from New York dies while swimming in Atlantic near Frisco

Cape Hatteras National Seashore has reported that a New York man died Monday afternoon, June 30, 2025 while swimming in the Atlantic Ocean near Frisco on Hatteras Island.

Resuscitation measures were attempted on the beach, but were unsuccessful.

According to CHNS, a 911 call was received at 2:51 p.m. A bystander observed a man face down in the water just east of Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Ramp 49 in Frisco.

Bystanders brought the man to shore and immediately performed CPR along with Hatteras Island Ocean Rescue staff. Dare County Emergency Medical Services staff and Cape Hatteras National Seashore Rangers also responded to the incident.

The man was reported to be a 67-year-old visiting the area from Nanuet, New York who had been swimming without floatation.

The rip current forecast for Monday for the beaches in Frisco was moderate, however rip currents were not observed in the area surrounding this incident, stated CHNS.

“Cape Hatteras National Seashore extends our condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” said National Parks of Eastern North Carolina Superintendent David Hallac.
