On June 11, Nags Head commissioners approved a site plan for the Town of Nags Head Wellness Center, a two-story 3200-square-foot employee fitness facility to replace the 1228-square-foot concrete block facility located at the municipal complex at 5401 South Croatan Hwy. The site will include two four-bedroom workforce housing units on the upper level.
The site plan, designed by Oakley Collier Architects, includes desirable architectural elements like cedar shakes, board and batten, a wraparound porch, and an 8/12 roof pitch.
“This structure is going to really show a lot of what we’re looking for in terms of our residential architectural design,” said Kelly Wyatt, director of planning and development, who also noted adherence to regulations related to parking, stormwater, sprinklers and buffering.
“Sometimes people say Nags Head is hard to work with,” added Mayor Ben Cahoon, “but we follow our own rules when we do our own thing, and we’re very transparent about that.”
He also applauded the town for taking the step to provide housing opportunities for employees.
Commissioners approved the site plan.
The mayor also received approval from the board for a resolution opposing tolls on the Ocracoke Ferry as presented in Senate Bill 257 and a resolution opposing offshore oil and gas development.
Residents are encouraged to mark their calendars for several community events. The annual Independence Day fireworks display is scheduled for July 4th at Nags Head Pier at 9:25 p.m. The fire chief reminded the public that fire permits will not be offered for personal fireworks.
On Tuesday, July 15, the night before the United States Lifesaving Association Regional Championships, the town will premiere a mini-film at Jennette’s Pier, Service and Heroism of Nags Head Ocean Rescue. The film was created in recognition of the 50th anniversary of Nags Head Ocean Rescue.
“It’s not just a documentary,” said public information officer Roberta Thuman to the lifeguards in attendance at the commissioner meeting. “It’s a story of the heart and the work and the real-life rescues that you do and how you’re prepared every day to save someone’s life. It’s not easy here being an ocean rescue guard, and we are highlighting all that you’ve done and the incredible history we’ve had.”
The event is free, but reservations are required through the town’s website.
