UPDATE: Name of New York man who died while swimming off Cape Hatteras National Seashore released

The name of the man who died while swimming off Hatteras Island Monday afternoon has been released.
John Joseph Csanadi, 67, Nanuet, New York, died the afternoon of June 30, 2025, while swimming in the Atlantic Ocean near Frisco. Resuscitation measures were attempted on the beach near Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Ramp 49 but were unsuccessful.
A 911 call was received at 2:51 p.m.
A bystander saw a man face down in the water swimming without floatation. Bystanders brought Csanadi to shore and immediately performed CPR along with the Hatteras Island Ocean Rescue staff.
Also responding to the incident were Dare County Emergency Medical Services staff and Cape Hatteras National Seashore Rangers.
“Cape Hatteras National Seashore extends our condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” said National Parks of Eastern North Carolina Superintendent David Hallac.
