Arrest made after gun fired in proximity of Roanoke Island baseball practice

According to the Dare County Sheriff’s Office, on Monday evening, June 23, 2025 at 8:03 p.m., Aulander Leon Liverman, 63, walked out of his home across from Westcott Park on Roanoke Island, yelling and waving a handgun. He fired the gun once into the air, reports DCSO.
Five adults and 10 children were in the park practicing baseball. Witnesses did not understand what Liverman was yelling.
Two DCSO deputies responded to the 911 shots fired call. Eventually, eight deputies were at the scene.
Liverman was arrested. According to the filed Magistrate’s Order, Liverman “unlawfully and willfully did:
“discharge a firearm within 300 yards of other dwellings
“assault … by intentionally pointing a gun, 9mm Ruger Handgun, at such person without justification
“resist, delay and obstruct … a public officer holding the office of Dare County Sheriff’s Office, by telling lies to mislead multiple officers about the weapon that was fired and its location. At the time, the officer was discharging and attempting to discharge an official duty by investigation of crime.
“arm himself with a dangerous weapon, a 9mm Ruger semiautomatic handgun, for the unlawful purpose of terrorizing the people of the county named above, and while thus armed the defendant did fire a handgun and waving it to intimidate 5 adults and 10 children at baseball practice.
“cause a public disturbance at Westcott Park, by engaging in conduct creating the threat of imminent fighting and violence. The conduct consisted of brandishing weapon and firing a weapon.”
The charges are all misdemeanors. Shortened versions of the charges are Discharge Firearm in City; Assault by Pointing a Gun; Resisting a Public Officer; Go Armed to Terror of People; and Disorderly Conduct.
The date set by the Magistrate’s Order for Liverman to appear is July 25, 2025 at 9 a.m. in Courtroom 2.
According to documents filed with the Administrative Office of the Courts, the Magistrate’s Order was issued at 11:27 p.m., June 23, 2025. The Release Order was filed at 11:31 p.m. on the same day. A secured $25,000 bond was posted at 12:43 a.m., June 24, 2025. Posting the bond is the only condition of release.
