Hyde County Schools recently celebrated the retirement of Sandra O’Neal, whose 25 years and 3 months of selfless service and quiet leadership have left a profound and lasting impact on the students, staff and families of Mattamuskeet School and beyond.

O’Neal began her journey with Hyde County Schools in a spirit of service substituting in both classrooms and cafeterias at Davis School, and later at Mattamuskeet when it served grades 7 through 12.

“Whether helping serve meals or assisting students, she stepped in wherever she was needed,” stated the HCS announcement of her retirement. “That readiness to help, that willingness to lead from behind, would go on to define her career.”

In January 2000, Sandra took on the role of interim substitute teacher assistant in third grade, quickly expanding her support to fourth and fifth grades. By August, she had earned a full-time position as an EC teacher assistant at Mattamuskeet Elementary School. After two years, she moved into a regular teacher assistant role juggling her responsibilities while pursuing an associate’s degree in early childhood education. She earned that degree from Beaufort County Community College in 2008, a testament to her work ethic and commitment to growth, noted the announcement.

Her journey continued in August 2014 when she transitioned to the MES Computer Lab as a teacher assistant. In that role, O’Neal did more than teach computer skills. She built student confidence, established structure and became a behind-the-scenes champion for both teachers and learners. Whether providing tech support, tutoring, managing the car line, coordinating the yearbook, or labeling Accelerated Reader books, O’Neal was always there, quietly making a difference.

“When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Sandra’s dedication never faltered,” stated the announcement. “She rode buses to deliver meals and learning materials, created technology tutorials for fellow staff, and ensured that students continued to learn even when classrooms went dark.”

Most recently, in August 2023, O’Neal joined the district’s Technology Department, supporting the Mattamuskeet Campus with device management, tech troubleshooting and student engagement. She led the Student Tech Club, helped run the middle school social media elective, supported tutoring and afterschool care, and, true to form, still found time for the yearbook and car duty.

“Sandra O’Neal’s career has been one marked not by the pursuit of recognition, but by the deep satisfaction of serving others. She has exemplified the values of humility, compassion, and unwavering dedication. Her contributions have touched countless lives,” the announcement continued.

“Mrs. O’Neal never sought the spotlight,” said Superintendent Dr. Melanie Shaver at the Board of Education End of Year Picnic for Mattamuskeet School. “But her light has always shone brightly through the lives of the students, staff, and families she’s supported. She has shown us what it means to lead through service.”

“Hyde County Schools extends heartfelt gratitude and best wishes to Sandra O’Neal as she enters this new chapter of life. May it be filled with joy, rest, and well-earned adventures,” stated the announcement.

“Congratulations on your retirement, Sandra. You have truly earned it.”
