STEM Friday at FFES lets students learn hands-on

On a recent STEM Friday, First Flight Elementary Schoolfourth graders created a Mayflower sailing vessel using plastic straws, tape and an index card. They then tested their Mayflowers in a tub of water.

If the marshmallow pilgrim sailed from one end of the tub to the other without tipping over or sinking, the Mayflower design was a success. In overcoming design challenges, students learned a lot about buoyancy, hydrodynamics and wind power.

Students taking part included Mackenzie Todd, Joslyn Felts, Wesley Burch and Tristan Croft.
