George “Dicky” Milton Hassell

George “Dicky” Milton Hassell, 72, of Manns Harbor died Saturday, October 13 at Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, VA.

Born in Columbia on December 16, 1945, he was the son of the late Martha Brent Hassell and Clarence Windsor Hassell. He was a commercial fisherman and attended Manteo First Assembly.

In addition to his parents, Dicky was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Thompson Hassell; son, Brian Keith Hassell; and five siblings, Joseph Hassell, Shirley Jackson, Ella Swain, Henry Hassell, and Jennie Gibbs.

Dicky is survived by daughters Ruetha Thompson (Noah Ambrose) of Columbia, and Tavia Apple (Brian Apple) of Kinston; grandchildren Hunter Hassell of Florida, Linda Pappas of Virginia, Michael Hawkins of Kinston, Tavia Hawkins of New Bern and Morgan Strumski of Manns Harbor; three great-grandchildren and three sisters, Alpean Terry of Jonesville, Va., Frances Forbes of Shiloh and Sucellia Murphy of Powells Point.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 21 at Manteo First Assembly with Pastor Steve Smith officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives following the service.
