Peter Haines “Pete” Smith

Peter Haines “Pete” Smith, 79, of Nags Head died Sunday, October 7 at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center in Chesapeake, Va.

Born July 27, 1939, in Fredericksburg, Va., he was the son of the late James W. and Adelaide M. (Solly) Smith.   He is survived by his wife, M. Kathleen Smith of Nags Head; daughter Dianne M. (John) Mercil of Ashburn, Va.; stepson Robert C. (Virginia) Griffith of Bryans Road, Md.; stepdaughter Cheri L. (Jon) Corson of California, Md.; sisters Valery L. (E. Lavelle) Sullivan and Marion E. (James C.) Miller of Fredericksburg, Va.; and four grandchildren, Jack, Luke and Madelyn Mercil and John Griffith; four nieces and one nephew.  He was preceded in death by stepson John W. Griffith and nephew Brian C. Sullivan.

Pete was a pipefitter with the Department of the Navy, working at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. and the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indian Head, Md.

A small gathering to celebrate his life and love of the water will be planned at a later date.
