Town of Duck Police officers have arrested 52-year old man from Grandy Carolina in connection with recent break-ins and thefts at vacant homes in Duck.

The break-ins were discovered by Duck police officers conducting routine, self-initiated property checks of vacant homes. Officers led a thorough and coordinated effort to investigate the burglaries.

While photographic and fingerprint evidence were collected at the crime scenes, it was a web-based home camera system that led officers to a break in the case.

A homeowner nearly 400 miles away was alerted by his camera system that an unauthorized person was inside his vacation home in Duck and contacted police. The suspect noticed the camera and quickly disabled it, but not before his image had been captured and transmitted.

Responding officers found thousands of dollars of high-end audio/visual equipment missing. Officers were quickly provided the video footage and recognized the suspect.

Duck Police officers worked with the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office to execute a search warrant for a storage unit and moving truck rented by the suspect. The search resulted in the seizure of televisions and other electronic equipment stolen from multiple homes in Duck and Southern Shores.

The man has been charged with felony breaking and entering and larceny. Further felony charges will be filed by the Duck Police Department, Southern Shores Police Department, and the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office.
