The National Weather Service described this week’s winter weather as minor.

The service reported developing low pressure off the Carolina coast combined with cold air to produce a minor snow event for eastern North Carolina during the afternoon and evening hours of Monday, March 12, 2018. The system was accompanied by strong gusty winds.

In Manteo, on Tuesday, March 13, an inch of snow was reported. On the same day, in Nags Head, two-tenths of an inch was reported.

The service posted wind, high surf and coastal flooding advisories for Dare County.

On March 12, Oregon Inlet posted the highest wind speed at 65 miles per hour. Other high wind speeds were reported at Stumpy Point at 58 miles per hour; Hatteras High at 52 mph; Avon at 50 mph; Manteo and Buxton at 45 mph. Engelhard clocked 39 mph on March 12.

On Monday morning, March 12, Pamlico Sound tide came up in Hatteras village, on NC 12 in Frisco and in Kinnakeet village.

It was another bad weather day for staff and students at Cape Hatteras Elementary and Secondary Schools.

At the Dare County School Board meeting March 13, Superintendent John Farrelly announced that, as a result of the closure, Cape Hatteras Elementary School would fall below the required 1,025 hours of school time for the 2017-18 school term. The current calculation is 1,019 hours for the elementary school.

Across the district, elementary schools’ daily schedule is shorter than secondary schools.

Farrelly said that adding about 10 minutes to 36 school days at Cape Hatteras Elementary School would earn a full day of hours. Exactly how 10 minutes would be added to the schedule was not determined at the time of the board meeting.

On Wednesday, March 14, a brief snow shower around 9:15 a.m. brought large, wet snow flakes to Hatteras Island. The flakes melted quickly. Then, about 5 p.m., small bits of snow also fell in Rodanthe. The sun was out at the same time.
