Letter: I’m recanting and taking it back

A few weeks ago, I wrote to the editors of the newspapers expressing my concern over the Dare County Arts Council’s plans to make some new uses of the vacant space behind the Art Center.
I expressed my unwavering love for the Town of Manteo and the county of Dare. The reaction to my letter was varied.
People let me know their opinions, pro and con. Dawn Enochs, a member of the arts council board, asked if she could come and see me. She did. She arrived loaded with photos, drawings and architectural plans. It turns out I was ignorant of the real description and facts about the project. An example of one falsehood was that there would be a rock-climbing wall for children.
Nope. Dawn spent several hours with me, fully answering any question I asked. Now I am glad that the Town of Manteo’s commissioners and the Dare County commissioners gave their approval. I was wrong and I don’t mind eating crow.
And now I have a new concern to bring up. I am 93 years of age. I would love to be able to know what is happening to my beloved Manteo. Having the town meetings televised would help in keeping “us oldsters” informed and not dependent on rumor or gossip.
