Section of NC 12 in KDH closing for culvert repair

A section of NC 12 in Kill Devil Hills will be closed to through traffic from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, to replace a failing culvert pipe.

The pipe is located at Milepost 8.5 at 710 Virginia Dare Trail, more specifically in front of the shops where the Thai Room restaurant is located. Access to all shops and rental properties will be maintained during the installation project.

The heavy rains and high storm water flows of the past month have further degraded the already failing culvert pipe, the town said in a news release.

The pipe is part of the Baum Street Ocean outfall system and is critical to the efficient drainage in this area. The condition of this culvert pipe has deteriorated to the point where immediate replacement must take place as soon as possible.

A detour has been set and will be signed for travel around the construction area.

Any unforeseen circumstances that would require a longer closure will be passed along as soon as possible.

The detour, for those traveling south, will go from NC 12 to Ocean Bay Boulevard, south on Memorial Boulevard, east on E. Baum Street to NC 12.

The detour for those traveling north will be from NC 12 to E. Baum Street, north on Memorial Boulevard and east on Ocean Bay Boulevard to NC 12.

Detour signs will posted along the entire route.
