Dare County public schools will reopen to students Tuesday.

In a letter to parents Saturday morning, superintendent John Farrelly said all schools on the beach and in Manteo have been assessed for damage and minimal storm impacts were found.

“As of now, it appears that it will be physically possible to have school on Monday except in Hatteras. However, with the mandatory evacuation, I am aware that many families and staff members left the area. I am also mindful of weather patterns and travel impacts across the state as rain and flooding continue,” he wrote.

Those factors were considered in deciding to keep school closed to students, he said. Monday, Sept. 17 will be an optional teacher workday.

Later Saturday afternoon, the school division announced schools will also reopen on Hatteras Island Tuesday after NCDOT determined NC 12 can be reopened.

I cannot express enough the need for individuals and families to make cautious decisions regarding your travel and family needs,” Farrelly wrote.
