Louise D. Law of Charlottesville, Va., age 83, passed away at The Laurels nursing home on Sunday, Feb. 3 after a long battle with cancer. Her closest friends and family members were there to comfort her in the end.

A lifelong Virginia educator, Louise grew up in Norfolk and graduated from Maury High School in 1953 and from Old Dominion University in 1957. After moving to Charlottesville, she taught in public schools and earned her master’s degree in 1966 and doctorate in 1977 in education at University of Virginia. After that, she began her 18 year career as a professor at Randolph Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg.

Louise was proud of the impact she had on her students and many kept up with her. During retirement, Louise split her time between a cottage in Kill Devil Hills, N.C. and her hillside town home at Mill Creek. She loved to read, garden, go hunting for antiques and dream of ocean pier fishing.

Louise had many fond memories of visiting her mother’s family on the Benton and Paxon farm in Gates County during her youth where they often made ice cream, canned vegetables and tended to the animals.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Norfolk restauranteurs Marie and Reuben “Rudy” Mangum. Surviving Louise are her sister Marion Mangum Kyte of Virginia Beach and her children Joy Law Call, Denise Law (Craig) Rogers, Daryl (Wanda) Law and grandchildren Caleb Rogers, Connor Rogers, Lauren Law and Austin Law.

The family would especially like to thank her best friend Louise Gregory, who cared for Louise in many ways until the bitter end as did Shamim Sisson, a former Randolph Macon colleague.

A memorial service was held at First United Methodist, 101 East Jefferson Street in Charlottesville with Pastor Phil Woodson officiating on Friday, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. No graveside service is planned.
