Mrs. Catherine T. “Irene” Gibbs died March 10, 2019 in Virginia Beach after a brief but serious illness. She was 82 and most knew her by her nickname “Irene.” Catherine was a naturalized US citizen born in Scotland. Fiercely independent, hardworking and extremely generous, she devoted her life to serving others through her work with battered women and suicide prevention. Catherine was a longtime coordinator for the Suicide Crisis Prevention Hotline, a non-profit agency in Portsmouth, Va. She was a charter member of the Scottish Society of Tidewater.

Survivors include husband Larry Wade Gibbs, son R. Wade Gibbs (Laura) of Chesapeake, brother Doug Neilson (Elissa) of Florida, grandchildren Andrew Gibbs, Alexandra Hodges (Macon) and Catherine Gibbs, as well as other relatives, friends and coworkers. Irene was predeceased by son Bruce M. Gibbs. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
