Vera Simmons Basnight

Vera Simmons Basnight was born on July 22, 1939 to the late Earlene and William Seward Simmons Sr. in Manteo, North Carolina. She departed from this life March 13, 2019 at Vidant Hospital in Greenville, N.C.

Vera, affectionately called Ma “V”, was an avid reader and a lover of Crosswords and Sudoku puzzles.

She will always be remembered as a terrific cook and a lover of music.

Vera received her education from Dare County School and the College of Albemarle.

Vera was a member of the Haven Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Manteo, North Carolina.

She became the nurturing mother of seven loving and devoted children, two who had preceded her in death; Herbert Carver and Vernon Malcolm Carver of Manteo, NC.  As well as her children Vernon and Herbert, Vera was also preceded in death by one precious Granddaughter.Sudell Spencer, her older Sister Pecola Simmons Strayhorn, and Brother William Seward Simmons Jr.

Being  an industrious woman who always sought to help provide for her children and Grandchildren. Vera worked as a cook at the Owens Restaurant, in Nags Head, NC and retired from the Dare County School System Nutrition Program as Cafeteria Manager

.Vera absolutely adored children and she showed her love at the Dare County Head Start and the Summer After School program.

Vera leaves to carry on her legacy, her children,

Calvin Carver and wife Rhonda and their children Venina Spencer, Seikeya Calvina Carver, Ta-tanisha Spencer, Jaqunda Farrow, Jacinda Farrow, all of Manteo, NC, Theo, Plymouth, NC, Aleazer Naylor, Jennifer Naylor, and Calvin  Anthony Ruff, Newark, New Jersey.

Rosa Carver, Manteo and her children Adena Carver, Tiara Sellers, and Woodson ‘Woody’ Carver, Raleigh, NC

James “JC” Cooper, Manteo and his twins Landon and Carter Cooper

Kenneth Carver, Manteo, and his son Ray McCoy

Anthony “AC” Carver and wife Tonia of Virginia Beach, Va  and their children, Alexandria, Christopher, Ndea, Tony, and Tania

Vernon Carver, (deceased son) and his children Temeca Carver and Kintrea Carver, Maryland, Josh Carver of the US Navy, Brittney Carver, and Courtney Carver of Kill Devil Hills, NC.

Her Sisters; Virginia Simmons Tillett of Manteo, NC, Minnie Trovene Artis and her husband Joseph from Norfolk, Va., Geneva Simmons Taylor and her husband Frazier of Prince George, VA.

Her Brother; Eddie Lee Simmons, Sr. and his wife Sally from Manteo, NC

Ma “V” leaves behind up to 25 plus Grandchildren and 10 plus Great- Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren

Vera also leaves behind one Aunt; Gladys McGill Simmons from Brooklyn NY, Her Sisters and Brothers In-laws, Raymond Basnight, Nelson and his wife Hattie Basnight, David and his wife Wanda Basnight, Jackie Wrighton, Ann Dianna Parker and her husband Jacob and Pamela Spencer and her husband Ricky all of Gum Neck, NC, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.

The family is eternally grateful for the skilled Physicians and all the compassionate caregivers from the Outer Banks Hospital and staff in Nags Head, NC and the Peak Resource Nursing facility in Nags Head, NC, Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Bch, Va. And Chesapeake General in Chesapeake, Va. and the Vidant Medical Hospital in Greenville, NC
