Lane closures start Monday for William B. Umstead Bridge

Drivers planning to use the William B. Umstead Bridge on U.S. 64 over the Croatan Sound over the next four weeks need to be aware of lane closures on the bridge.

A required inspection of the structure, also known as the old Manns Harbor bridge, calls for alternating lane closures between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. during weekdays from April 29 through May 23.

Traffic control during the closures will be handled using flagmen and motorists need to use caution and anticipate delays as each lane takes turns traveling along the 2.7-mile bridge.

An alternate route is available to avoid potential backups using the Virginia Dare Bridge on U.S. 64 Bypass, located south of the Umstead Bridge.
