The Roanoke Island Business Garden of the Season for spring 2019 is Mount Olivet United Methodist Church. A mainstay in Manteo, the church was originally built in 1887. Some of the stained glass windows date back to 1907, others were added during a renovation in 1985.  All of them make a lovely backdrop for the gardens.

Attached to the building are three large flower boxes that contain annuals of the season. Pansies, planted in the fall, crowd together with happy faces will soon fall victim to spring’s heat and be rotated out with summer blooms. Pink and red azaleas, pittosporum and knockout roses hug the chapel walls.

There is a Japanese maple and crape myrtle to add height to the garden. Red camellias and pink oleander provide color during any season. The gardens themselves are not large, the church building dominates the corner lot at 300 Ananias Dare. But the flowers and plants are inviting, they beckon friends and neighbors to linger after church services and perhaps spread a kind word.
