Letter to the Editor: From a longtime Dare County educator

To the Editor:

Since March of 1979, the Dare County Board of Education has employed me, and I am indebted to the past and present board members for continuing to renew my contract without reservation. I am also thankful for the families in Dare County who have entrusted me with the care and education of their children and for the Dare County Schools’ staffs with whom I have worked that many times motivated me to be better than I thought I could ever be. The thousands of students whom I have loved, taught, advised, and coached have enriched my life immeasurably, and I will not, willingly, give up the memory of a single one!

I am certain that I will not “go gentle into that good night” of retirement. I have struggled and I will continue to struggle with my decision. I have truly done what I loved, and loved what I have done. There have been times that I have put the needs of my students and my colleagues before the needs of my own family. Miraculously, my family has understood and supported me throughout my very long career!

I am grateful to so many for the inestimable opportunity to answer my “calling” for so long in Dare County Schools. My life, to the present time, truly could not have been any better, and I am hopeful that for many years to come I will continue to be a positive influence in the lives of those with whom I come into contact.
