Daniels Day: A longstanding tradition continues

The annual reunion of the Daniels family of North Carolina will be held on Sunday, August 18, at 3:30 p.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church in Wanchese. This is the 85th reunion of the family and the 285th anniversary of the arrival of William Daniels on Roanoke Island.

Daniels Day, as the reunion is called, began in 1934 by Josephus Daniels, then Ambassador to Mexico and publisher of the News & Observer, and by Melvin R. Daniels Sr., Dare County’s longtime Register of Deeds and civic leader.

M. Roy Daniels III announced that the guest speaker for this year’s reunion will be Dr. Hilton Barrett, educator, entrepreneur and cousin. “We are honored to have Dr. Barrett address our family and friends this year,” said Daniels.

Special music will be provided by The Captain’s Crew, who have supported the Daniels reunion and the local community for many years. Family history and the Daniels family scholarship also remain important presentations each year.

Daniels Day is always open to the public and all are invited to bring their favorite reunion dish or dessert. The Daniels family continues to celebrate this tradition in an atmosphere of faith, fellowship, food and fun.

“A wonderful afternoon has been planned for all ages to enjoy,” said organizers.
