Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative has issued a scam alert for Hatteras Island.

The cooperative said several Hatteras Island businesses have reported being called by a local 252 number, claiming to be Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative.

The caller states that a cooperative truck is on the way to disconnect service due to non-payment. “This is a SCAM! We will never demand payment over the phone, threatening immediate disconnect. Accounts are given ample notice if a payment is late, with several reminder calls and opportunities to make a payment. If you receive a phone call from Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative and are unsure of its validity, please hang up and call us at 995-5616,” says the cooperative.
