Columbia: Estimated 198k gallons of partially treated wastewater released, will end up in Scuppernong River

The Town of Columbia has reported the by-pass of partially treated wastewater at the Columbia Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP), located at 604 N. Road Street Extension in Columbia.

The discharge at the WWTP occurred early Friday, September 6 and is estimated to have released 198,000 gallons. The discharge will eventually enter the Scuppernong River by way of swamp land and an unnamed canal that empties into the river.

Town officials explained that the discharge occurred when a backup generator failed to come on when power was lost during Hurricane Dorian.
