Cape Hatteras varsity volleyball wins over Bear Grass

Cape Hatteras Secondary’s varsity volleyball team won a 3-2 match against Atlantic 5 rival Bear Grass Charter in Buxton on Thursday night.

Four of the five sets were closely contested, with long volleys and quick defensive play.

Bear Grass took the first set 25-20. Four times this set was tied. Bear Grass pulled away in the second service round. Addison Dotson served the last three points.

Cape Hatteras snatched the second set, 25-19. In the second service round, lead off server Laura Hooper dished up eight straight points. Backed up by strong defense, Cape Hatteras catapulted ahead 20 to 8. The teams gained two points and traded serves. Bear Grass crept up to 24-19 before Cape Hatteras scored the winning point.

Bear Grass scored a 25-23 win in the third set. Eleven times the score was tied.

In the fourth set, Cape Hatteras walloped Bear Grass 25 to 8. Grace Shoemaker, serving second, propelled Cape Hatteras forward with an 11 point binge. When she finished serving, Cape Hatteras led 15-1. Lillian Ratliff served up four points to bring the set to 22-6.

The fifth set, played to 15, was again close. Six times the teams tied the score. It was tied at 3, at 5, at 9, at 10, when Bear Grass pushed ahead 12-10. Cape Hatteras scored a point, to close to one; Bear Grass scored to push ahead 13-11. Hooper was stepped behind the line to serve. The Cape Hatteras team tied the score at 13 and added the next two points, to take the match.

On Wednesday, the Cape Hatteras team journeyed to First Flight and turned in another winning performance. First Flight took the first set 25-15. Cape Hatteras won the second set 25-23 and third set 25-21. First Flight claimed the fourth set 25-15. Cape Hatteras won the match 15-13.

In Thursday’s junior varsity play, Cape Hatteras scored the first win 25-14 and Bear Grass the second, 25-15. Bear Grass pushed ahead on a long rally by Emilee Perry moving from a tied score to 19-14. Cape Hatteras came close at the end but never gained the lead. Bear Grass won 25-23.

This home conference match was played at the Fessenden Center in Buxton. Cape Hatteras varsity has an overall 8-4 record and a 2-0 conference record.
