At the Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting on Monday, Oct. 7, commissioners approved a 25-year lease agreement with the Town of Manteo for three adjoining parcels in downtown Manteo. The county-owned parcels are located on Ananias Dare Street and Budleigh Street. Demolition of buildings and a parking lot formerly located on the parcels began in August and is nearing completion.

According to the agreement, the Town of Manteo desires to construct Manteo Town Common consisting of open green space, public parking and other public recreational facilities. The Town of Manteo will be solely responsible for the costs of construction and maintenance of Manteo Town Common.

To help resolve long-standing parking issues in downtown Manteo, commissioners requested that a minimum of 65 parking places be included in designs for the space.
