Panayotis “Pete” D. Mavrommatis

Wanchese – Panayotis “Pete” D. Mavrommatis, 92, of Wanchese, died Friday, October 18, 2019 at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.

Born in Athens, Greece on October 16, 1927, he was the son of the late Jasmine Milliones and Demetrius Mavrommatis.

After earning his master’s degree, Pete pursued a career as a math teacher. An NYSU Professor, he later became the Chairperson of the Math Department and the Dean of the Evening College. In addition to authoring a math book, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking, and woodworking. He was an avid NC State, NY Mets, and Dallas Cowboys fan.

Pete is survived by his wife, Jewel Tillett Mavrommatis; two daughters, Kimberly O’Malley (Tom) and Kate Mavrommatis; four grandchildren, Taryn Flowers (Jonnie), Demi Walker (Zach), Candance Snider (John), and Ashley Detroia; and two great-grandchildren, Hayden Flowers, and Ava Walker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings.

A funeral was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at Bethany United Methodist Church. Burial followed at Tillett Cemetery.
