John 1:32-34 – Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”
What have we seen and what do we testify to? Unlike John, we have never seen Jesus. We have never see the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove descend from heaven and light on him. We didn’t hear the voice from heaven that spoke and said this was his beloved Son. And yet we still believe, don’t we?
But that does not mean we believe with no basis, with no facts, with no good reason. Can’t we see God all around us each and every day? We see the world God has created. We consider the natural laws he has put into effect. We can read the Bible and see the consistency and truthfulness of what God has revealed to man. We can see what God has done in our lives and the lives of others. And those things ought to convince us about the truthfulness and faithfulness of God. I dare say, in America, there are many people who believe in God, who would credit him with many of the blessings in their lives. However, their lives stop short from honoring or glorifying him. They might see, but they don’t testify. And if they are not willing to testify, what does that say about their faith?
So, how about us? Are we willing to testify, to stand up for what we believe? Are we willing to speak up, even when everyone else is speaking against?
Father, help me be a faithful witness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
