Vernon James Gilbert, 57, of Wanchese, died February 9, 2020 at his home. He was a successful boat builder and business owner of Blue Devil Boatworks, LLC.

Born in Virginia Beach, Va. on March 30, 1962, he was the son of Mary Louise Gilbert and the late William Edward Gilbert. Vernon attended Frank W. Cox High School.

In addition to his mother, Vernon is survived by son Derek Gilbert; daughter Carolyn Gilbert; and siblings Joanne Barry, Buddy Gilbert and Vivian Bryant. Also, surviving is Lisa Haynes, stepmother of Derek and Carolyn Gilbert and mother of David and Ethan Haynes; grandsons Finn Gilbert and Liam Jones.

A celebration of Vernon’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on February 15 at Wanchese Assembly of God. A reception will follow at The Pavilion at Pirate’s Coves Marina beginning at 4 p.m.
