Tyrrell County Schools Superintendent Oliver Holley issued the following statement Wednesday, Feb. 5:

“We have been made aware of a scam involving the request for funds to be donated to Columbia High School. We are currently working with the Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Department to gain additional information into this event.

“The perpetrators are making phone calls to area businesses and contacting others via social media, requesting donations. Those donations are requested in the name of Columbia High School.

“The individuals are requesting your credit card information to process those donations. In return for those donations the scammers are offering items from the school, such as water bottles and towels. This is completely false and a SCAM.

“We appreciate any donations to the district, however, we are NOT soliciting your credit card information.

“If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me directly.

“If you have been contacted by the scammers, please contact the Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office and report this activity.”
